Guns in Berkeley High School

BERKELEY, Calif. — Berkeley Police arrested three local high school students Tuesday for crimes related to gun possession on campus, making March the third month in a row to have had a gun-related arrest at Berkeley High School. Two students were arrested after a gun they brought to the school went off in a bathroom, and the third was arrested a short time later for having an unloaded handgun, Berkeley Unified spokesman Mark Coplan said. The school was temporarily put on lockdown while officials responded to the incidents, which started at about 8:45 am when a custodian heard what sounded like a gunshot on the southeast side of campus, Coplan said. The custodian saw two students walking out of a bathroom near some portable classrooms before leaving the campus, so he told a safety officer on the street that he thought the students had been involved with the gunshot. The safety officer ran after the students while he radioed the safety team and the Berkeley Police Department, Coplan said. The rest of the safety team did an initial campus closure, which involved putting an administrator or a safety officer at each entrance. The suspects circled around the campus and tried to enter from the other side, but the safety team knew who they were looking for, Coplan said. The students were apprehended when they tried to re-enter the school grounds, and they were handed over to Berkeley police. The suspects were interviewed extensively and denied any involvement in the gun’s going

Which is better major to lead into law, specifically corporate law and/or tax law? Economics or Finance?

Question by Jamal Biggums: Which is better major to lead into law, specifically corporate law and/or tax law? Economics or Finance?

I want to go to Northeastern and I’m currently a Junior in high school. I have an internship setup with a professor at Berkeley’s Law School and I’m wondering first, which major would be better, and would it be beneficial if I got an internship with someone at Wells Fargo?

Best answer:

Answer by Anne C
I know a person who went and did philosophy as a B.A. for pre-law. Doing so is beneficial mostly due to the logic classes you take. You could major in finance and minor in economics or economics and minor in finance or dual major in both or major in philosophy and get two minors in economics and finance.
It would also be a good idea to talk to an adviser and see what they say about what you should major in.

The Art of Cold Calling

The Art of Cold Calling

I wish I could tell you there is something called “The Art of Cold Calling.”

But that alone, the “art-part” of dialing and smiling won’t make you any moDr. ney.

People don’t pay for art, as such, they pay for the results that art produces.

Walk into a gallery or a museum. When you see a piece of art that causes what is called “aesthetic arrest,” which means the painting or sculpture stops you in your tracks, then that work has been successful.

It got your attention, and it became the centerpiece of your consciousness. It moved you to some sort of action, altering your attitude and your behavior.

Cold calling seldom reaches this level of effectiveness. We have to contact lots of folks before a good number of them will listen to our message and respond as we intend.

Which means that there must be a system to cold calling, a science to it, which has to partner with the art. Think of it as brawn-and-brains, Beauty and The Beast.

One without the other won’t work.

For instance, there are tens of thousands of call centers around the world that will gladly make lots of “ugly” calls for you, right now. There is no art to the construction of their scripts. They’re spraying and praying, often contacting the wrong people, littering the listening landscape with features and benefits, hoping some will stick.

They’re working “The Law of Large Numbers,” which will work for them in producing results, providing some art has been put into their scripts.

At the same time, there are people that have fashioned beautiful presentations, a pleasure to hear and to recite, that are completely ineffective because there is no commitment to systematically rolling them out.

It reminds me of the line attributed to St. Augustine: “There is no joy in heaven over empty churches.” Ditto for empty art museums and galleries, and for phones that go uncalled.

When I was disseminating my seminars across the country, I devised an ultra-short cold calling script that didn’t sound like one. It lasted about twenty seconds, and to this day, I marvel at the elegance, beauty, simplicity, and above all, the art of it.

But equally important, I committed to using this presentation, relentlessly. That’s a strong word to use, because it took very little effort to make this cold calling script come to life.

What were the results? Nearly every college and university I contacted about sponsoring my seminars said yes. Two or three said no.

Within 18 months my customer service and telephone sales seminars were conducted from Hawaii to New York.

I’ve often thought that the best poems have been balled-up and tossed in the trash, and the world’s greatest canvasses have been painted over, never to be seen and appreciated.

Yes, your cold calls can and should be beautiful, but once they are drafted, they must march forth and finish the job.

As Sheldon Hayden, a cohort of Dale Carnegie, and one of my best public speaking teachers advised:

Be brief, Be brilliant, and Be done!

Q&A: Law school: does it matter which one you attend?

Question by beckham72314: Law school: does it matter which one you attend?

Yeah so I want to attend law school after university, so after around 1.5 years. Obviously if one goes to Harvard Law, Princeton, and the like there’s no question about that. But I’m wondering if it really matters if I go to Southern Illinois Law School (Carbondale) or if I go to Loyola Law, which is in Chicago. SIU is a lot cheaper. When I asked a lawyer about this he said “When you go in front of a judge he won’t ask you where you went to law school or what you got on the LSAT.” So, I guess does it matter or not really? If it does, why does it matter? Thanks!
