India Endows at Columbia Law School Chair Devoted to Indian Constitutional Law, Jagdish Bhagwati Fellowship
New York, NY (Vocus) April 8, 2010
Columbia University has received two gifts from India to endow a chair devoted to Indian Constitutional Law and establish a fellowship named after Professor Jagdish Bhagwati, both at Columbia Law School.
The gifts were formally announced Apr. 1 by Meera Shankar, India’s ambassador to the U.S., during an appearance at the Law School to speak about democracy and pluralism in India.
“This initiative adds an important dimension to Columbia University’s long and illustrious association with India,” Shankar said.
David M. Schizer, Dean and Lucy G. Moses Professor of Law, noted it was essential that the Law School develop greater expertise about India.
“In the 21st Century, India will play an increasingly important role as the world’s most populous democracy. India’s economic influence is also growing rapidly,” Dean Schizer said. “From India, the world has much to learn about pluralistic democracy and about successful economic development in a democratic system.”
The first gift will establish the B.R. Ambedkar Professorship in Indian Constitutional Law. The second will endow the Jagdish Bhagwati Fellowship.
The chair is named after Bhimrao Ramji Ambedkar, a renowned Indian lawyer, politician and civil rights activist who was the architect of the Indian Constitution. Ambedkar received an M.A. from Columbia University in 1915, and a Ph.D. in 1927. He died in 1956.
“At Columbia we have both a deep intellectual history and a thriving contemporary engagement in India across many academic fields,” said Lee C. Bollinger, President, Columbia University; Professor of Law. “What is most important about the new Ambedkar Chair and Bhagwati Fellowship is that they are not simply powerful examples of this history but of a Columbia future that reflects a truly global perspective on law and society. We are deeply grateful for the generous gifts that have made this commitment possible.”
The first Ambedkar professor is Akhil R. Amar, a visiting professor and constitutional scholar from Yale Law School.
“It’s humbling because this chair is a connection between India and America and that connection has a lot of meaning to me personally,” Amar said. “When I told my dad about all of this, tears came into his eyes. When he was born, India was a British colony. It achieved its independence under Gandhi and Ambedkar and that’s his life story.”
India will also underwrite the Jagdish Bhagwati Fellowship, which will fund a minimum of two Law School fellows per year. Preference shall be given to students who are residents of India and are interested in performing work and research in international trade, trade law, public interest law, and human rights.
Bhagwati, one of the world’s best-known economists, is University Professor at Columbia University and a Senior Fellow in International Economics at the Council on Foreign Relations.
Bhagwati is widely regarded as the intellectual father of Indian economic reforms that Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has led, which have transformed India into a rapidly growing force on the world stage. Columbia University has recognized his achievements by founding the Jagdish Bhagwati Chair in Indian Political Economy, now occupied by economist Arvind Panagariya.
The acceleration of India’s growth rate has also had a substantial impact on poverty, which has been Bhagwati’s principal concern since he began his career in 1961 in the Indian Planning Commission. His writings on democracy, secularism and religious freedom, have led to acclaim beyond the world of economics for Bhagwati and complement the achievements of Ambedkar regarding social justice in India. Among his many awards is the Padma Vibhushan, India’s second-highest civilian honor.
“I feel flattered,” Bhagwati said of the fellowship. “There is something in being recognized, not just by economic peers, but also by your own country. I feel very happy about that.”
Columbia Law School, founded in 1858, stands at the forefront of legal education and of the law in a global society. Columbia Law School joins its traditional strengths in international and comparative law, constitutional law, administrative law, business law and human rights law with pioneering work in the areas of intellectual property, digital technology, sexuality and gender, criminal, national security, and environmental law.

The Ultimate Software For Legal Study: AspenLaw Studydesk Saves Time, Enhances Learning
The Ultimate Software For Legal Study: AspenLaw Studydesk Saves Time, Enhances Learning
New York, NY (Vocus) January 23, 2007
Law school students overwhelmed with organizing and learning the mass of legal information before them now have a dynamic new productivity tool that streamlines studying and facilitates learning. Created by a law student for law students, AspenLaw Studydesk (http://www.AspenLaw.com ) from Aspen Publishers is groundbreaking software that enables students to create, organize, search, visualize and display information more easily and effectively so they spend more time learning the law, and less time organizing information. Aspen Publishers, part of the Wolters Kluwer Law & Business group, is a leading information provider for attorneys, business professionals and law students.
“AspenLaw Studydesk transforms the learning process for law school students, enabling them to work smarter, spend time on the highest value areas and achieve better results in the classroom and on exams,” said Jennifer Armstrong, marketing director for Aspen Publishers’ legal education group.
Organize, Integrate, Succeed
AspenLaw Studydesk is the only integrated software tool that gives students control over how they spend their time in organizing, accessing and learning information.
AspenLaw Studydesk gives students an organized structure for managing information, allowing them to enter cases, class notes, statutes and sources into easy-to-use templates that provide a uniform format and filing system for information. Then, users can simply sort, search and display data in the format that works best for them. Additionally, a Legal Concepts index connects related materials, making it easy to access information on any legal topic form anywhere within the application. A MiniView feature allows users to scroll through thumbnails of documents, so they can search and find information in seconds, giving students the tool they need to master Socratic debate in class.
The software solution also creates a powerful digital integration between students’ materials and Aspen Publishers’ ancillary study materials, providing a single source solution for enhanced learning.
“Integrating Aspen Publishers’ study materials into the AspenLaw Studydesk creates a dynamic environment from which users can gain a deeper understanding through active and intuitive learning,” said Armstrong. “And, the best part is all the students’ materials are in one place on their desktops, which helps lighten their backpacks.”
The digital study materials from Aspen Publishers, such as Examples & Explanations, Emanuel Law Outlines, Law in a Flash cards and Casenote Legal Briefs, integrate with students’ own materials, allowing them to sort, search, display and instantly link to Aspen Publishers’ content to learn more about legal terms and topics.
Most importantly, AspenLaw Studydesk helps students succeed in law school.
“It’s all about results,” said Armstrong. “This innovative tool helps students chart progress throughout the semester and prep successfully for exams.”
With AspenLaw Studydesk, students can generate study tools from their notes and briefs, including flashcards, quizzes and course outlines, providing the most efficient and effective way to study. Flashcard and Quiz Wizards help students save hours of study preparation time, while an Outlining Wizard enables them to scroll through course documents, drag and drop, sort, fine-tune, preview and save — all in the same application. Search tools let users perform look-ups on both their own data and Aspen Publishers’ content.
Designed By a Law School Student, for Law School Students
AspenLaw Studydesk was developed based on the first-hand experience of Yale University Law School graduate Daniel Tobey who knew that there had to be a better way for students to organize, learn and use the mass of information they were working with.
Tobey attended Harvard College where he graduated Magna Cum Laude with Highest Honors in Social Studies and was awarded the Philo Sherman Bennett Award for the best essay on the principles of free government. He received his law degree from Yale University where he was also awarded the Benjamin Scharps Prize for the best paper by a third-year student and the Margaret Gruter Prize for the best paper on law and biology. A native of Fort Worth, Tex., Tobey passed the Texas Bar Exam in 2005 and is a former associate of Vinson & Elkins, LLP.

New Memoir is Fulfillment of the American Dream
New Memoir is Fulfillment of the American Dream
Williamsburg, VA (PRWEB) May 19, 2011
In 1959, Martin Luther King Jr. stepped onto the campus of Yale for the first time at the behest of David George Ball. A recently immigrated student, Ball took interest in King’s leadership of a boycott of segregated buses in Montgomery, Ala. and asked him to speak at Yale. That meeting changed Ball’s life forever leading him into public service and eventually to assistant secretary of labor under former President George H.W. Bush.
A Marked Heart is Ball’s remarkable memoir that begins in the midst of rationing and bombing in wartime England, continues through his journey to America at 17-years-old, and eventually onto the campuses of America’s most elite universities and beyond. Under the watchful eye of his strict mother and minister father, Ball sought to carve his own path. His religious upbringing guided his life, but his desire to be independent guided his decisions.
At the insistence of his parents, Ball came to America to take the pastors’ course at Moody Bible Institute in Chicago. Later as a scholarship student at Yale, he invited the relatively unknown minister, Martin Luther King Jr. to speak at a lecture series he’d organized. Inspired by King’s example and interest in politics, Ball decided he wanted to make a difference in people’s lives. His upbringing shaped his journey and the brief encounter with Martin Luther King Jr. shaped his heart.
“The dream inspired by King led me in a completely unexpected direction. While assistant secretary of labor I got out a road map for the 401(k) plans, which was described in The New York Times as “the most significant thing to affect the pension industry in years,” said Ball.
His educational and professional successes would be tested when his first wife committed suicide leaving Ball to raise their three young children. A Marked Heart is Ball’s story about finding his way in a new country and about overcoming extraordinary obstacles to achieve great success. Ball’s story is the ultimate American story.
About the author:
David George Ball grew up Gloucester, England during World War II and came to America in 1954 to take the pastors’ course at Moody Bible Institute in Chicago. Later, he enrolled at Yale as a scholarship student and an encounter with Martin Luther King changed the course of his life. He never became a minister, but vowed to help make the world a better place as a lawyer. After Columbia Law School, Ball worked for a Wall Street law firm where he became interested in helping workers who changed jobs and were unable to take their pensions with them. In 1981, as an executive at AMAX, Inc. he championed the first 401(k) plan adopted by a large industrial company. When President George H. W. Bush nominated him as assistant secretary of labor, David fulfilled his dream by getting out a road map to open up the revolutionary 401(k) program. Today, more than 70 million Americans have 401(k) plans.
