LAWHELP/NY Named Semifinalist for The Collaboration Prize

New York (PRWEB) November 14, 2008

The New York LawHelp Consortium has been chosen as a semifinalist for The Collaboration Prize, a new 0,000 award meant to recognize and encourage collaboration among nonprofit organizations. The Consortium developed and runs LawHelp/NY (www.lawhelp.org/ny), an online resource offering detailed statewide legal aid referrals, know-your-rights information and a variety of self-help tools to New Yorkers facing legal problems.

At a time when nonprofits are grappling with an extremely challenging economic climate, this recognition for LawHelp/NY highlights how collaboration can lead to both increased efficiencies and better outcomes.

The LawHelp/NY Consortium, which is made up of 11 legal aid, bar and pro bono organizations throughout the state, was nominated for the prize by the Hon. Juanita Bing Newton, Deputy Chief Administrative Judge for Justice Initiatives for the New York State Unified Court System. The Consortium is among 30 semifinalists chosen from 644 nominations.

By pooling resources, the Consortium has made Lawhelp/NY into a one-stop destination for those seeking help with legal problems ranging from eviction, foreclosure and internet fraud, to child custody, domestic violence and discrimination. “Hundreds of thousands of vulnerable New Yorkers benefit every year from the information they find on LawHelp/NY,” said Leah Margulies, LawHelp/NY Project Director. “Community groups and social service agencies no longer have to struggle to keep up-to-date lists of free legal services and know-your-rights information, because it’s all available on one website.”

In her nomination, Judge Bing Newton noted that, “LawHelp/NY has had an enormous impact not only on its intended beneficiaries, but also on legal services throughout the country as a model for similar sites.” In selecting LawHelp/NY as a finalist, The Collaboration Prize’s judges also highlighted that the model is “highly replicable in other communities.” Since 2001, Pro Bono Net, a founding member of the Consortium, has replicated the LawHelp model in 27 additional states as part of its mission of increasing access to justice through the innovative use of technology. The expansion of LawHelp was funded in part by the Legal Services Corporation.

The Collaboration Prize was launched in 2008 by The Lodestar Foundation, in association with the Arizona-Indiana-Michigan (AIM) Alliance, to recognize nonprofit collaborations that achieve exceptional impact and significantly eliminate duplication of efforts. This group of semifinalists will now be narrowed down to eight finalists, to be announced in December, and the winner will be announced in March 2009.

The LawHelp/NY Consortium consists of City Bar Justice Center, Legal Services NYC, The Legal Aid Society of New York, Pro Bono Net , Volunteers of Legal Service, Legal Aid Society of Northeastern New York, Empire Justice Center, New York State Bar Association, Legal Assistance of Western New York, Legal Services of the Hudson Valley and Nassau/Suffolk Law Services.

Does giving help in pharsing a sentence for a legal doc considered as giving legal help?

Question by kitty_23230: Does giving help in pharsing a sentence for a legal doc considered as giving legal help?

My bf and I disagree on sth and need your help. I’m not a lawyer by training but he is. I work as a contract admin and needed to draft an agreement for work bw one location and another subsidiary in another state. I have drafted the whole document but at the end I couldn’t find a proper “lawyer-like language” to address an idea.
So i asked him to help phrasing the sentence and provided him with all the background info needed, that it’s just for formality bc if it would serve in a law suit, it would be like two diff departments suing each other under the one company!

I said the idea of the sentence was there already so technically he did not provide me with a legal advice. However my bf considered that “giving help in phrasing a sentence is giving legal advice

Please tell me if I’m right or he’s right?? and why??

Best answer:

Answer by wizjp
Technically he’s right.

Altering the language in a legal document is technically giving legal advice IMHO.

Doesn’t the fifth amendment violate abortion without a court order of some sort?

Question by Holy Holly: Doesn’t the fifth amendment violate abortion without a court order of some sort?

Fifth Amendment:
“No person shall be…nor be deprived of life, liberty, or property, without due process of law

Abortion Ruling:
Thus, the [Judiciary] Committee observes that no significant legal barriers of any kind whatsoever exist today in the United States for a woman to obtain an abortion for any reason during any stage of her pregnancy.

In other words, shouldn’t disclosure of pregnancy and attempt to abort be issued to the government before an abortion can occur. Especially to insure compliance with the following statement regarding viability by the court:

“potentially able to live outside the woman’s womb, albeit with artificial aid.”

Best answer:

Answer by reelperspectiv
Abortion is murder. I used to think not, but when there is a living human being, with a heartbeat mind you, its murder.

Top 250 law firm Howells Increases Support for Community Legal Advice Centres via BigHand Digital Dictation

London, UK (PRWEB) January 29, 2009

BigHand has today announced that Howells, a Top 250 firm and one of the largest suppliers of Legal Aid in the country, has implemented the BigHand digital dictation workflow system to streamline dictation and transcription for 138 users across its Sheffield and Rotherham sites. As a result of the implementation, Howells now also provides administrative support via terminal services for two local Community Legal Advice Centres, in line with the recent announcement of legal aid ‘Route Maps’.

Howells suffered extensive flood damage late 2007, wiping out much of its tape dictation equipment. John Ellis, IT Technician at Howells had been considering the switch to digital dictation for some time in line with the firm’s expansion plans, and therefore approached BigHand for a rapid response and implementation schedule that would minimise downtime as much as possible. With the largest digital dictation implementations team in the UK, BigHand was able to deliver the project in line with the firm’s timescales, whilst retaining a first class level of service. John commented:

”The cost of sourcing old tapes and dictation machines has ballooned over the past year or so as the equipment starts to go out of production, plus as we experienced first-hand, mechanical equipment does not provide any provision for business continuity. The life of tape equipment is short and therefore with regard to the long term cost implication of maintaining it, moving to digital dictation makes financial sense.

Since implementing the BigHand workflow system we have been able to support both our staff and additional advice centres in a way which was simply not possible using tapes. Document production backlogs have been significantly reduced and our productivity improved.

I have been very impressed with BigHand, and would certainly recommend them to other firms looking to streamline processes and cut costs.”

During 2008 legal aid firms Venters and Glaisyers announced return on investment as a result of implementing BigHand digital dictation. Venters reported saving £3,000 per lawyer within 12 months of implementing the system, and Glaisyers an increase in fee earning capacity with zero growth in its support team.

Legal Aid Reform Boost for Glaisyers via BigHand Digital Dictation

London, UK (PRWEB) January 16, 2008

BigHand has today announced that the Lancashire based Legal 500 firm Glaisyers has reported efficiency gains within its Legal Aid practice since implementing the BigHand Digital Dictation workflow system. The Carter Reform outlines the requirement for more efficient legal aid working practices and as a result of installing the BigHand system, Glaisyers has increased its fee earning capacity with zero growth in its support team. The firm is forecasting further fee earner growth for 2008, without an increase in support.

Chris Bryan, Partner, and head of the legal aid team championed the switch from tape equipment to the BigHand system.

Chris comments:

”The Carter Reform states that legal aid firms must become both leaner and more efficient: BigHand enables firms to work far more efficiently. The workflow aspect of the technology is very strong; many of our fee earners are now able to work remotely, either at home or at court, and submit dictations direct to our internal support staff or straight through to Voicepath. We will shortly be implementing BigHand’s BlackBerry dictation to further enhance the provision for remote working.

BigHand has totally removed the need for temporary cover. We experienced what must be the true acid test recently, where a key secretary was off ill for 6 weeks; this combined with pre-planned holidays left the firm with only 2 secretaries in the family department. The ability to split work between our remaining secretaries and our outsourcing partner Voicepath, ensured that all dictations and work were completed on time; quite an achievement.

The firm now outsources all attendance notes through the BigHand system direct to Voicepath. The flexibility to split dictations, with internal secretaries completing the more urgent and important skill leveled work, has enabled the firm to invest in its support team and crucially ‘skill-up’ secretaries.”
