How did state law overrule federal law during life under the Articles of Confederation?

Question by patrick C: How did state law overrule federal law during life under the Articles of Confederation?

I know that each state had a vote, and in order to create a law there must be either 9/13 votes for or a unanimous decision, I cant remember right now.

But the idea that my teacher was trying to get across to me was that state law at times overruled federal law, and it is what citizens were mostly concerned with.

Any examples anyone could give would be fantastic. Thanks!

Answer by Alex,one-eyed in the land of the blind.
One argument against the Articles of Confederation is that congress had no power over state governments or their citizens. If an individual citizen or a whole state government ignored a resolution passed by congress, congress couldn’t make them follow the resolution.

Example:States quarreled with one another over land claims, commerce regulations, and frequently erected imposts against neighboring states. Although strictly forbidden by the Articles, states established relations and treaties with foreign nations and refused to send much needed tax money to Congress. Due to the difficult amendment process, attempts to endow congress with greater authority to tax and to regulate commerce could be stopped by the refusal of a single state.

How are muscaria mushrooms legal while psilocybin mushrooms are illegal?

Question by MC5Jams: How are muscaria mushrooms legal while psilocybin mushrooms are illegal?

Both have hallucinagenic properities, the only difference is that muscaria mushrooms (such as fly algaric) are legal and can cause serious sickness/brain damage, while psilocybin mushrooms are illegal and create hallucinations, extremely similiar to muscaria mushrooms, without the unpredictable, unwanted side effects associated with muscaria. How is this possible from a legal stand point, and if psilocybin mushrooms are illegal, isn’t it kind of fucked that these more dangerous mushrooms are legal, and not illegal with psilocybin?

Answer by Anonymous
It is very simple. At some point modern society decided that any narcotic which causes pleasure without a medical necessity is immoral and should be band. Anything which is deadly does not need to be banned (just as marijuana is illegal because it causes relaxation and light-headedness while inhaling carbon monoxide is legal, because it causes death as well as light-headedness) because it kills anyone attempting to use it and thus is not (and should not be) tempting.
